Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town to discover the “Gallipolinità” – the true spirit of Gallipoli – made up of small things and great beauty. Everyday life told through the sea, the houses built from carparo, the local reddish stone, and the Baroque churches. A story that unfolds through fishermen's legends and the wealth of lampante oil, stored beneath the city, which made Gallipoli the queen of lampante oil in the 1700s. We will visit an underground oil mill, which was a lampante oil “factory” in the 1700s, the courtyard houses, the noble palaces, and the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Agatha, with its 700 square meters of painted canvases and polychrome marble altars. The walk starts near the Castle, a bulwark overlooking the sea that defended the city in centuries past.
