Opened in 1830, a stone's throw from the sea and ever since a privileged meeting place for business men and politicians. It is famous for having been the first to introduce the novelty of the 19th century, ice-cream. The original decorations by Lorenzo Gatteri and the mirrors brought in from Belgium by Tomaso Marcato - the owner - give the café the sophisticated atmosphere of a Viennese café. Svevo wrote here and Claudio Magris created his masterpiece, Danube, seated at its tables.
