With its 75 metres of height it may look like the Eiffel Tower. But its "foundations" lie at sea, in a corner of Trieste's Porto Vecchio (Old Harbour), at Pier 23. It is one of the largest and oldest floating cranes: the Ursus.
The Ursus is a rare example of industrial archaeology, an important work of mechanical and naval engineering, which has contributed to the building of port and coastal works.
Fully designed and built at Trieste's Dockyards, it was used in the realization of naval projects that have provided Trieste's shipbuilding industry with a record of high quality.
The Ursus, which staged tourist events, such as a national photography competition and some art exhibitions, was present, with its imposingness, at Trieste's famous Barcolana regatta.
Last Christmas charming colourful beams of light illuminated it, thus making it an object of curiosity and admiration for the many tourists present in the city.
The inner space is of 800 square metres and can be transformed into conference rooms or museum venue or gallery for art exhibitions. The external area, on the other hand, would be a charming location for concerts and various shows.
