Situated on the right hand side of Piazza Unità d’Italia (as you look out towards the sea), it was built in 1904-5 with the name Palazzo della Luogotenenza (the Lieutenant’s Building). It boasts two significant elements: a double central porch and an extremely luminous mosaic which originally depicted an eagle, the symbol of the Habsburg dynasty, subsequently replaced in 1919 by a cross, symbol of the House of Savoy. The mosaics are repeated on the façade facing the sea and at sunset create a marvellous play of light and reflections. There is a plaque on the same façade proclaiming victory at sea in 1918, with a peculiar wording: the text praises the victory over the enemy fleets from “Premuda to Piave, from Pola to Trieste and Trento”, thereby including the main town of the Trentino region - not exactly on the sea - in a naval battle.
