On Piazzetta S. Nicolò, one of the most evocative places of medieval Padua, enshrined between the Meschini Palaces and the 17th-century Palace Brunelli-Bonetti, there is the Romanesque Church of Saint Nicolò.
Once connected to the complex of the Reggia Carrarese, the Church of St. Nicolò was founded in 1088, but in 1973 some restoration work disclosed the presence of much earlier foundations.
Since 1178, the year when it was included among the city Parishes, it has been well-known that there was a cemetery in correspondence to the current church yard and that many noble families from Padua were buried inside the church.
The current layout of the church however goes back to the 16th century. After a number of renovations and restoration, the church was raised and widened, with the addition of a fourth aisle on the southern side of the church.
