The Baptistery was first erected in the 11th century, and altered in 1260 with the addition of the small lateral apse. In 1376, Fina Buzzaccarini, wife of Francesco the Elder, chose it to host the family tomb. Giusto de' Menabuoi was called for the decoration, and here realized his great masterpiece. Giusto was a celebrated Florentine painter, schooled in the Milan of the Visconti era, previously active in Padua in the Church of the Eremitant. The cupola was erected to receive Giusto's Scenes from Genesis and Creation of the World. On the dome itself, the Creator is seen at the centre of paradise, surrounded by three concentric rings of angels and three of saints, which close at the sides of the Madonna, splendid in her mantle in cobalt blue and lead white. The wall paintings narrate the life of John the Baptist, Christ and the Madonna. Giusto again presented these scenes in a small lateral apse, but now as a wood panel polyptich, along with important episodes of the Book of Revelations Apocalypse. The decoration recognises and celebrates the Carraresi signori, in the heraldic crests of Francesco the Elder, frescoed in the pendentives, but also in the numerous crypto-portraits and images of members of the Duomo committee, inserted in various frescos. In the lunette we see Fina presented to the Madonna, and also see her as she witnesses, with her daughters, the birth of John the Baptist. In the Crucifixion, Francesco the Elder is seen in the garb of a Roman centurion. Meanwhile, Petrarch, Lombardo della Seta, Fina Buzzaccarini's sister Anna, and Abbess of San Benedict's are all shown as witnesses to the Miracle of Christ. The cathedral itself is carefully depicted, in 13th century appearance, in the Vocation of Mathew. The sepulchre of Francesco the Elder was originally located at the centre of the hall, while that of his wife Fina was over the door leading to the former cemetery area: these were removed by the Venetians in 1405, along with the tombs of Giusto de' Menabuoi and his wife.
