The cave church of Santa Barbara is among the most beautiful in the Matera rock area. With its rock-cut architecture, the building is inspired by Byzantine ecclesiastical art and architecture.
The church has been built into the rock and has a narthex dug between columns with capitals, iconostasis frescoes, and other columns with capitals on the side walls, and deep carved domes dug in the church plate ceiling.
Two are the altars made in the rock, one in the sanctuary elevated some steps with respect to the nave and the other leaning against the side wall of the room with the dock.
Interesting are the Latin inscriptions on the wall that leads into the church by the sacristy, and the numerous tombs discovered both inside and outside the church. You can admire the fresco of the "Madonna and Child" and many frescoes of Santa Barbara made in different historical periods.
