Construction of this church was commenced in the year 1256 by the Canonici Regolari di San Marco, a Mantua order founded half a century earlier.
A former church is said to have stood on the same site, called Santa Maria in Campo Santo and built in early Christian times on the spot where the Blessed Longino and other martyrs offered their supreme act of faith.
With its asymmetric gabled facade adorned with a rose window and fine doorway, spacious nave and two aisles, Santa Maria del Gradaro is one of the most important surviving examples of late-13C art in Mantua.
