Via dei Macelli di Soziglia is one of the narrowest and liveliest alleys in the old city centre and derives its names from the slaughterhouses, macelli in Italian, that operated in the 12th century in this then out-of-town area.
A veritable example of the typical Genoese alleys, known locally as caruggi, this place has kept its popular spirit, where people still shop the way they used to in the olden days. Meat is still displayed on ancient marble slabs, fish nestles on a bed of ice and fruit and vegetables are on full display inside their boxes.
The delicatessen shops all sell typical Genoese products and as much pesto as you can possibly ask for.
This ambiance of yore, where there are also bars, restaurants, vintage boutiques, craft workshops, household article shops and children’s play areas is a place where shopkeepers and customers still manage to meet, greet and smile to each other.
