The Museum dedicated to the Risorgimento, Italy’s struggle for freedom, independence and unity in the 19th century, is located inside the birth place of Giuseppe Mazzini. It houses and displays a vast heritage of historical and artistic collections, including documents, paintings, prints, weapons, uniforms, photographs and mementos, that momentarily revive the most iconic figures of Italy’s Risorgimento, such as Giuseppe Mazzini and his republican and democratic movement, Giuseppe Garibaldi and his army of Camicie Rosse (or Red-Shirts), Goffredo Mameli, author of the Italian National Anthem.
The newly devised display, improved by means of multimedia installations, describes the historical developments that led to the Unification of Italy, ranging from the Genoese uprising against the Austrians in 1749 to the unveiling, in 1915, of the Monumento ai Mille di Quarto, the Monument to the One Thousand men who set sail from Quarto with Giuseppe Garibaldi.
