A unique city with a long and interesting history.
A unique city with a long and interesting history. Parts of the old city are still being renovated. The ancient cave structures that have been transformed into modern hotels, restaurants, shops and bars are worth seeing. Tourists are not allowed to bring cars into the old city and parking outside can be tricky. Also, there are a lot of steps and uneven pavement so comfortable shoes are a must. Not very accessible for those who have mobility issues.

We loved our Ape Tour of the city.
We loved our Ape Tour of the city. As seniors, we were not able to walk the hills and steps so the tour was a great overview of the history. Beautiful, historic city! Glad we got here.. then had to go to our next hotel and watch the James Bond movie that was filmed there!

Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago! Matera is the oldest continuously lived-in-settlements... in the World! Our yellow-washed stone house had a balcony to enjoy our cappuccino & roof-top terrace to gaze at the stars. It alone was another jewel of an experience. The town makes you feel as though you are a witness to Biblical times. You've seen it featured in Mel Gibson's "Passion of Christ" & Bond 007's "No Time to Die".

Matera is a step back in time.
Matera is a step back in time. The old town is built around the original old town, Sassi. Very easy to get around even tho it looks like a lot of stairs and ups and downs. Food great, people friendly. The local bread is amazing. Home made pasta in many restaurants is amazing.

A fantastic historic and mainly unspoiled place, great for just wandering around and taking in the atmosphere. Pretty hilly everywhere which we loved but not for everyone. Good walking shoes are a bonus as the worn stone you find everywhere can be a little slippy when going down hill or if it rains.
Unlike almost every other historic location in is not ruined by cars and traffic! Well, not yet. The weather in mid October was a dry 30 degrees at noon, it would be too hot for me in July but it was perfect for sight seeing and walking everywhere.
Staying at Corte San Pietro was a dream come true for me as I had always wanted to stay in a cave. My expectations were more than fulfilled! The rooms were extremely spacious, beautifully decorated in monochromatic earth tones, clean and comfortable. In the heart of Matera Corte San Pietro was THE place to stay. Our hosts were more than helpful, gracious and kind. The taxi service with the garage made coming and going from the hotel extremely easy. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. Highly recommend Corte San Pietro!
The staff at Sant’Angelo was truly amazing!!Everyone was so gracious, helpful and knowledgeable .Michele was fantastic. He went out of his way to make everything perfect for me and my family. This was the most amazing stay at this hotel. My grandparents are from Matera, so it was really special. The resort was like no other! The stunning views, the authenticity of the caves (with some added glam). The magical city views ! This is a must if you’re going to Matera. I can’t wait to go back.
I traveled with my wife, our 1 year old baby, and my cousin. We did not even remember requesting a crib, however, there was one waiting in our room upon arrival which was awesome! Our bed and the sofa bed were both extremely comfortable and we slept great! The room was right in the heart of Matera and only a few steps away from some great restaurants. It was also convenient being able to park our car at the top and be shuttled in to the hotel. Thanks for the amazing stay!
Rooms were obviously so unique, ours was inside the cave and huge. Sleeping here was such a unique experience, I loved it. The location and view from the hotel was amazing as well. Breakfast was EXCELLENT- plenty of selections, good quality food and the view on the outdoor patio was breathtaking. I didn't want to get up from the breakfast table. The pizza restaurant right beside the hotel was also so so so good. If you're in Matera, pizzeraia "Piu Sud" is a must.
Amazing location in the Sassi. Stairs to reach it and a little hard to find until you get your head around Matera map. The hotel’s instructions for parking were helpful. We stayed 2 nights and had upgraded to a balcony suite which was located next to the hotel - excellent views and large rooftop deck for evening drinks. Large living room and a bedroom both with good sized windows. Older style furnishings and terrazzo floors. Good breakfast buffet.
It was so nice to be upgraded into bigger room upon my arrival where I found a cute Xmas tree. The hotel is located in a cave and it is easy to find as you walk directly up Via Casalvuo from the main square passing Matera Museum. There is the best view over Matera from the hotel terrace and the tiny alley behind the hotel back gate. My stay exceeded all my expectation in Matera and this hotel. I would definitely return here again!
Brilliant location, a few hundred metres from Matera’s historic centre yet superbly quiet & calm with plenty of secure parking & a very pleasant pool to relax by. Extremely nice & plentiful breakfast served in a light & airy breakfast room - which you really appreciate after all Matera’s cave dwellings! Hotel staff very helpful, gave us town maps & good recommendations for restaurants within 5-10 minutes walk.
Booked a junior suite cave room in this minimalist and stylish cave hotel. Stylishly decorated with thoughtful fixtures and fittings and great sunken bath! Great location in sassi Caveoso for discovering Matera. Their own underground cisterns and caves were incredible. Great breakfast available and worth having to set you up for the day. Staff informative and helpful.
Pleasant and helpful reception in a beautifully designed room carved in stone and rock. Also smells clean and fantastic. Nice mattress, slept well, lobby is beautifully lit, making the parts carved in stone look biblical. Most importantly, however, the hotel captures the experience, one of the nicest hotels we stayed in on our Italy trip. Grade 9/10
Matera is a unique place in Italy and the hotel completely reflects this fact. It is fabulous and very unique place to stay.
The hotel is in the middle of the historical site.
The bed was probably the best I ever slept on in any hotel.
The owner is a great person who spent a lot of energy time and money to create a fabulous place
Our room was unique and roomy and beautiful, and our terrace had a stunning view of the Sassi. This cave hotel experience was beyond my wildest dreams! Great breakfast. A staff member collected my suitcase when I arrived with a tour group in Matera, and then I stayed on by myself; later joined by my daughter. And this all worked!
Property is in a very good location, close to the train station and few minutes from the city centre.
Very modern property with the shared kitchen area.
Bed was very comfy with the whitest bed linen I have ever seen in a hotel.
Danilo provided the best customer service.
Would definitely stay again if visit Matera.
Hotel owners & staff were very helpful - we arrived late due to flight cancellation and they helped us park the car and get us sorted. Nice breakfast. Great location. The cave room we had was very nice - good shower and lots of space. Bed was OK (for Italy !). Shared terrace outside.
The new hotel is well-designed. The location is also perfect, accessible by car and walking distance to the main sites. There was a 24/7 reception which was very helpful. A lot of good restaurants nearby. This is the perfect base to explore Matera!
This is an amazing hotel and one of my favorites in our 3 week trip to Italy. Everything is fantastic! The location is perfect! Our room was large and luxurious. Lovely terrace overlooking the town of Matera. Very helpful staff. Tasty breakfast.
The room was very spacious and clean. It was also very quiet so we could relax well. The hotel is a very nice view to Matera old own from its Terrace. The staff was also very friendly and gave us a lot of tips and suggestions.
The location is perfect. The property is amazing! Looked like a boutique hotel. The staff- Giuseppe was very helpful. Went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. The comfort of a luxury hotel in a cave room.
Boutique cave hotel with attention to detail. Great location in the Sassi with walking distance to sites and restaurants. Fantastic young brother/sister team that we’re beyond fun and helpful.
