Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.

The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia.
The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia. The ancient city is exceptional and definitely worth staying over the night . You easily get lost when walking around (GPS is not very helpful) but it is part of the adventure;) . Be prepared to climb many steps and take your time to enjoy the unique climate of the place.

Matera is a beautiful place with stunning views of the sassi and cave dwellings. There are also some interesting attractions that you can visit to gain a better understanding of how people used to live and what Matera went through before becoming a UNESCO site and the amazing place it is today.
One such attraction is Casa Noha, which is a multimedia demonstration inside a historic stone house. It provides a helpful insight into the history of Matera and the struggles of cave-dwelling life.
Another interesting place to visit is Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera, which is not just a cave-dwelling but also a living museum. You can experience what it was like to live in a cave with a straw bed, tiny kitchen, and livestock all within the confines of the cave.
Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce is a church located on the other side of the Sassi. It offers great views and is definitely worth the drive from Matera.

We had a wonderful time at Matera.
We had a wonderful time at Matera. The people were very friendly even though the season was just about to start and alot of facilities were still closed. We had a great first of the season meal at Enoteca dai Tosi with a tour of the facility. Tasted new wine, delicious meats from the local butcher, local cheeses, and some dishes from the new menu. The town is so beautiful, that you can't take a bad picture. You must prepare for a lot of stairs and walking...have comfortable shoes...
The town was even prettier at night. It was great! We wanted to stay longer and keep exploring....
We stayed two nights in Matera at Fra I Sassi. It was a fantastic hotel in a perfect location in the Sassi. The view from our room’s own terrace was absolutely breathtaking. The room was in a restored cave but modern, beautiful and spotless. The property was peaceful and secure. All the staff were lovely, and breakfast was super. We used the parking and transport service offered by the hotel and it was worth the extra cost. Matera is magical and so is this hotel!
The owner was super nice, communicative and her English was excellent. You can tell they have the customer experience really well thought out.
Bed was comfy, room was gorgeous and clean, room was also big with balcony access which was lovely for sipping wine in the evening.
Breakfast was the best free hotel breakfast we've had across our 10 days in Italy. The spread wasn't huge but it was high quality. It surpassed even the 5* Marriotts we've been to.
Amazing location for exploring both the main tourist bits of Matera and for access to the beautiful hikes in the surrounding countryside. Room was very spacious with fantastic views from the private balcony. All the staff were brilliant, incredibly attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. The property is beautiful, combining the stone and "cave" like features that Matera is known for, with the elegance and sophistication of a luxury hotel.
Palazzo Degli Abati is a beautiful boutique hotel well located in Matera. The views from the terraces are stunning. The room we stayed in had a glass floor displaying the ancient dug out cave. The room was very well equipped with good quality fixtures and the bed was very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast had a wide selection of sweet and savory options and was very generous.
Our "cave room" was fantastic, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Great views from our window and from the hotel premises. Also the best breakfast we had in Italy by quite a margin, with everything from newly baked foccacia to fresh fruits. The staff was helpful with informing us on where to walk to see the most of Matera. No luxury hotel, but everything we wanted from a hotel in Matera.
Can’t decide if the hotel design, scent, location or the service was more exceptional… It is a unique hotel, worth every effort to stay there. Their service is top notch. We had two bedrooms (4 adults) and everyone was so pampered and we felt relaxed, happy, woke up in beautiful bedding and ambience. Did I mention the scent of their rooms?? Fantastic stay, we will happily always go back!
This hotel is really special. It's wonderful to stay in a cave room while in Matera and to be able to look out of your room onto the Sassi. The breakfast was great and it was fun to use the Roman Thermae pools. Angela at the front desk was the best. She was friendly, welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and it was an excellent choice for our 15th anniversary!
Booked a junior suite cave room in this minimalist and stylish cave hotel. Stylishly decorated with thoughtful fixtures and fittings and great sunken bath! Great location in sassi Caveoso for discovering Matera. Their own underground cisterns and caves were incredible. Great breakfast available and worth having to set you up for the day. Staff informative and helpful.
The breakfast here was awesome! Everything in my room was pretty clean, and the balcony was a treat. Staff very friendly! About a 10 minute drive from a parking garage where you can park and then walk down into Matera and you can park for free on the hotel property. Definitely an ideal way to see Matera so you’re not driving down all the tiny narrow roads in the city.
Being in the heart of the Sassi was the best part of our stay. The views were incredible all the way around! We appreciated this little hotel despite its shortcomings - nothing compares to having this cave experience and imaging what Matera was like was back in the day, this was truly special. It was so easy walking everywhere from here. We honestly loved it!
Exceptional and unique experience staying in a cave in Matera. Our cave was incredible, staff were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed aperitivo outside our room, drinks were wonderful. Breakfast was lovely too and served in a unique space. I recommend getting up to watch the sunrise, as the view from the hotel is spectacular.
Our 2nd trip to this hotel in Matera and we'll definitely be back.
Such a beautiful setting and the cave rooms are stunning. The reception and breakfast rooms are also magical. Had the breakfast room to outlrselves for two mornings out of our trip (0830) and such a fantastic setting and fabulous choice at breakfast too.
Staff were fantastic. Prior to arrival they sent us a message with detailed directions on how to get to the hotel - these directions were critical as we arrived at night and walked into Matera in the dark. Owner also gave us a map a suggested walking route to visit the city and it was perfect.
An amazing boutique hotel in the hart of Matera. The rooms are in the caves and offer coolness throughout the day. The breakfast is plentiful and the owners are very helpful (they even brought us back to the central parking spot when the shuttle bus was not available).
Words can't express how much we loved this hotel. It is small and charming and close to everything. We elected to have breakfast, which was actually served at the hotel across the street. Breathtaking views of Matera. Everything was wonderful. Will stay again!!!
The location is tops near the main piazza and hub of Matera. The arrangement the hotel has with a nearby garage for parking. And the receptionist was so helpful in setting you up for the visit
Service at the highest level! The staff treats this place like home. This is definitely the best hotel I have stayed in Italy. I advise everyone to choose this hotel😍
It was really unusual experience! If you visit Matera, it definitely worth staying in a cave hotel so that you can make a complete impression of the town.
