Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

Bari is interesting and certainly worth a visit.
Bari is interesting and certainly worth a visit. The old town is crowded and busy and the narrow streets are fun to explore but your jostled quite a bit and we were warned about pickpockets. Parking is also VERY difficult and all the car parks were fil and closed off. We got lucky and found a spot but it was luck!

The staff at the tourist info are very cordial and speak good English. Recommend to book a city tour to get to know Bari and it's traditions better. The coastline and Old Quarter were spectacular. Our favorite upscale restaurant recommended by a local friend was Giampaolo, Ia Francesco Lombardi 18, Bari. Another cafe we recommend is for the seaside location and long opening hours (7am-1am): Riviera, Lungomare Nazario Sauro 19, Bari

The location wasn’t bad I felt very safe in the surroundings area. Bari center and old town are a €10 taxi ride. We walked from old town to the hotel in about 20 minutes. Bari seems safe to me we walked all over the place lot of bars and fair priced restaurants.
