World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered to be better than in this medieval gem.
Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look for "ragú" on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savor their food, so a meal can last for hours.
Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops are found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage sites. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views of this red-roof city.
The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square, the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088, are home to the city’s best museums.

Our favorite place is Centro Commerciale Centronova and Trattoria La Montanara. We ate great burgers in the restaurant and traditional Bolognese cuisine in the trattoria. In Bologna we traveled by bus and car. Both options are NOT problematic. Of course the small streets are difficult, but it's not a problem. You just have to be aware of Italian driving, sometimes it's stupid and thoughtless. I would recommend not going to the great basilica of San Petronio. The staff is terrible, they have stupid rules - for example take off your hat, and it's raining and cold outside!!! A huge basilica, but inside it is very dark and nothing can be seen. Almost all niches are closed and not illuminated. There was an uncle who wouldn't let you into the only open niche - it was for those praying!!!! And there is no one!!!! We have been to many places and cathedrals and basilicas, but nothing like this. The basilica itself remains unfinished. There are very few drawings, and nothing can be seen from the darkness. Pure waste of time. There are churches and cathedrals nearby - San Pietro Cathedral, it's very beautiful and everything can be photographed with flash.AngelBulgaria - 10Scored 10

Bologna is a great city escape for 3-4 days. You can easily walk through the old streets of the town, which are full of architectural treasures. There are more than enough places to sample all the delicacies of Tuscany, such as cold cuts & cheeses, pasta dishes and of course a great aperitivo to end your day.

Bologna is a lovely city with many historic buildings and museums and dozens of fabulous restaurants. It's also a convenient centre to reach other interesting Italian cities by a short rail journey. This time we visited Ferrara and Faenza. Last visit we had a day in Modena and a few days in Ravenna. Neither Venezia nor Firenze are too far for a day trip. Everything is great about Bologna especially if you're a young person. Great food, not very expensive and mostly positive and friendly people. A lot of students in Giuseppe Verdi Plaza was great to see. There's plenty of cheap food that is high quality but even the high end restaurants are not very expensive. I found Bologna a very beautiful city. Easy to walk around with many interesting buildings. I am 78 and found walking easy. I found the hop on and off bus excelkent value . I would recommend getting the 2day ticket. There are a range of eateries so one can grab a slice of pizza or have a full meal. The aperol spritz are served with small savoury delights. It is very convenient because the stop of the bus to Bologna Central Station is a step away from the entrance of the building. Very clean and nice. The building itself is located next to a small, quiet park. The apartment has a shared kitchen with two other apartments. I forgot some stuff in the fridge. I called the owner, Roberta, and she was very accommodating to pass it on to a company that handles lost luggage at hotels, for which I thank her very much.
