The Sophistication Behind Supercars
A foodie heaven, affluent Modena is also a petrolhead paradise, as Italy’s most prestigious supercars are crafted in and around the city. The three-pronged Maserati logo proudly marks their Modena headquarters, while a museum in Cittanova to the west houses vintage vehicles.
Lamborghini produce their distinctive V8s in Sant’Agata Bolognese, while the most famous of them all – Ferrari – has turned the nearby town of Maranello red. The church bells even ring every time their F1 team wins!
Enzo Ferrari’s former home is now a Modena museum, while a theatre is named after another famous resident: Luciano Pavarotti. The most famous export is balsamic vinegar and Villa San Donnino offers wonderful tastings, and local tortellini and lambrusco are served up in pavement cafes and bars.
UNESCO World Heritage-listed Piazza Grande is a cobbled square part-lined with the porticoed town hall. Opposite is the 12th-century, white-marble cathedral which is overlooked by the Ghirlandina belltower.
A few streets away, stately Palazzo Ducale is home to the Italian Military Academy, but was once inhabited by the powerful Este family after they fled Ferrara. Some of their Italian art collection is displayed in the Museum Palace, alongside archaeological collections. This was a really lovely city with an extensive pedestrian town centre. The Duomo is a highlight, the covered market is charming (it re-opens in the evening with a variety of what seem like pop-up restaurants) and the very grand town hall was worth a visit. You are spoilt for choice for restaurants - we liked Stallo Pomodoro and Da Danilo for dinner- both had outside terraces, and for lunch, Aldina, a very traditional no frills trattoria on the first floor near the market. Really a treat, Modena deserves to be better known. A beautiful and walkable city, with magnificent food, good and variegated shops, and did I mention the magnificent food? The Galleria Estense is an excellent museum (with all information in Italian and English). Opening hours for churches are a bit intransparent (and not always kept), but the city is definitely worth a trip!

Absolutely loved Modena, so much to see and do. Ferrari museum in Modena was excellent, next to the train a a bus station, absolutely loved Luciano Pavarotti museum, quick cab ride there. Great to see the balsamic vinegar centre, small town with so much to offer! Highly recommend!

We were glad to leave our car in the gated parking and just walk everywhere in town. As we visited during a heatwave we even went back to the room in the afternoon to enjoy the AC and take a nap in the comfortable bed. If you get tired of walking into the city, you can also just take the bus, as there are plenty of bus stops close to the room. We also really appreciated the coffee machine with the free espresso pods!
