Palombaro Lungo is a large tank that branches off under the old part of Matera. It's one of the most mysterious and evocative places of the city as the entrance is located in Vittorio Veneto square, the city center.
The tanker, built in 1846 at the behest of Bishop A. Di Macco, served as water reserve in support of the inhabitants of Sasso Caveoso.
The word "Palombaro" is derived from the Latin plumbarius, that is the person that covered with lead the pipes that carried water from aqueducts to homes, fountains and spas.
The tank is 15 meters deep and contains about 5,000 cubic meters of water. Today, thanks to the restoration work, underground scaffolded stairs allow tourists to visit it. During the visit you will be amazed by the mysterious and silent atmosphere crossing tunnels, caves and tanks.
